120mm 2S12A carrier mortar is designed to engage (suppress) by high-angle fire the enemy's personnel and firing assets located:
- in the open as well as in field entrenchments;
- on the back sides of hills and in canyons;
- in close vicinity to the forward edge of the battle area.
The mortar can be used to fulfill the following tactical tasks:
- destruction of entrenchments, ditches, communication trenches and light log emplacements, breaching gaps in wire obstacles;
- fire support and infantry support;
- adjustment of fire and target designation with the use of smoke and illuminating mortar bombs;
- illumination of the battlefield forward edge and the enemy firing positions, observation and command posts;
- screening the enemy firing positions and observation and command posts with smoke, laying a smoke screen for infantry attacking the enemy's defense lines.
This 120-mm mortar fires HE mortar bombs. Smoke, illuminating, incendiary and leaflet bombs can also be used to conduct certain tactical and fire tasks.

At Customer request, other transport vehicles may be used provided they have suitable carrying capacity and cruising range. In this case the system weight and dimensional characteristics shall be changed accordingly. The mortar may be supplied with a wheeled carriage without a carrier.

In its base configuration the 2S12A carrier mortar consists of a 120mm 2B11 mortar, 2L81 wheeled carriage, single SPTA kit for mortar and a transport vehicle.

Transport vehicle
2L81 wheeled carriage

2L81 carriage enables the crew to move the mortar for short distances and transfer it into combat/ transport position, load/ unload the mortar onto a transport vehicle platform/ into the vehicle body and, if required, to tow it behind the transport vehicle.
Transport vehicle is designed to transport the crew and the mortar with the wheeled carriage and ammunitions. It may also be used to tow the mortar for short distances. The mortar on the wheeled carriage is loaded into/ unloaded out of the transport vehicle with help of a motor-driven winch situated in the vehicle body. It facilitates the crew work significantly and helps to reduce the time of deployment/ displacement.
120mm 2B11 mortar can fire any 120mm HE bombs.
120mm 2S12A carrier mortar has high rate of fire, range, accuracy, maneuverability characteristics as well as high bomb fire power thus providing the troops with the capability to effectively and timely perform various combat missions emerging in modern warfare environments.
